چکیده

s everal intrinsic and extrinsic factors have been advoated in the pathogenesis of rotator cuff tears, but it is till unclear whether the origin of the tear is related to endon degeneration itself or induced by several morhologic changes. The purpose of this study is to deermine the relationship between the acromial coverge of the humeral head and the presence of a cuff ear. We evaluated 148 shoulders, including 45 that nderwent surgical rotator cuff repair (group I), 26 ith documented rotator cuff tears treated conservaively (group II), and 77 with no cuff pathology as a ontrol group (group III). The mean acromial coverage ndex was 0.68 in group I, 0.72 in group II, and 0.59 n group III, giving a highly significant difference (P 0001) between the control group and both cuff tear roups. Patients with a cuff tear have a significantly igher acromial coverage index than the control roup. (J Shoulder Elbow Surg 2007;16:347-351.)

Relationship of Acromial Morphology and Rotator Cuff Integrity

The influence of individual acromial morphology on the pathogenesis of rotator cuff tears remains controversial. Since Neer first described the impingement syndrome, several authors have described the morphology of the acromion. In this study, we try to find a physiopathological correlation between the anatomical morphology of the acromion based on these two recently descripted parameters (Acro...

Correlation of acromial morphology with impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tears

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Indications for acromioplasty are based on clinical symptoms and are generally supported by typical changes in acromial morphology on standard radiographs. We evaluated 5 commonly used radiographic parameters of acromial morphology and assessed the association between different radiographic characteristics on the one hand and subacromial impingement or rotator cuff tears ...

Relationship of individual scapular anatomy and degenerative rotator cuff tears.

BACKGROUND The etiology of rotator cuff disease is age related, as documented by prevalence data. Despite conflicting results, growing evidence suggests that distinct scapular morphologies may accelerate the underlying degenerative process. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the predictive power of 5 commonly used radiologic parameters of scapular morphology to discriminate betwee...

Acromial shapes and extension of rotator cuff tears: magnetic resonance imaging evaluation.

Magnetic resonance imaging makes it possible to inspect the status of the rotator cuff and the shape of the acromion. To clarify the relationship between acromial shapes and rotator cuff tears, we evaluated magnetic resonance images obtained in 192 shoulders. We classified the acromial shapes into 3 types: type I (flat), type II (curved), and type III (hooked). Among a group of 91 shoulders wit...

Shoulder impingement: objective 3D shape analysis of acromial morphologic features.

PURPOSE To retrospectively and quantitatively analyze the acromial undersurface in three dimensions and to determine its association with impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tears. MATERIALS AND METHODS Institutional review board approval was received with exemption of informed consent for this retrospective HIPAA-compliant study. Magnetic resonance images were evaluated in 84 patients (63 ...
